Amie’s Rest
A vulnerable young woman is sheltering in an abandoned cottage in woodland above a Scottish loch. She has run out of money and is distrustful of the outside world, but she’s determined to survive on her own terms, to live her own life.
A search for self, home and love set against the majestic, rain-washed landscape of Argyll and Bute.
Amie’s Rest questions the limitations we set ourselves and impose on others.
Nature writing combining detailed observation with a lightness of touch, transporting the reader into the Scottish countryside to walk alongside Amie.
Yaara Lahav Gregory, Night Swimming in the Jordan
In shimmering prose, Anna Lunk draws us into Amie’s psyche, and the strange environment in which she finds herself. Amie’s Rest is a haunting exploration of the impact of trauma, as well as a thrilling hymn to the effect of the natural landscape on the human spirit.
Sophie Pierce, writer and broadcaster
Extract from Chapter One
Walls, dark grey stone, not pretty, but solid, good and solid. Would stand up to a storm, keep standing over time, long time. Roof, corrugated, like a roof of a farm building. Door planks going up and down. Windows broken glass downstairs, but upstairs all right.
Was heading north towards the empty places, small towns clinging onto the edge of the land, strings of islands. Pete had read her the names off the map on the screen; Arisaig, Mallaig, Gairloch, Scourie. Arisaig, Mallaig, Gairloch, Scourie, names to roll around her mouth as she walked, song names. Places they’d live one day, just the two of them. But for now it was just her.
I’m fascinated with concepts of home and belonging, particularly in relation to landscape. Since a brief spell as a residential social worker I’ve felt that labelling can be both beneficial – where it means specialist help can be accessed – and negative, damaging self esteem and limiting potential. Amie’s Rest explores both these themes.
